Book Review: DragonSpell

DragonSpell
DragonSpell by Donita K. Paul
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I loved this book so much! The magic and dragons and quests are just perfect, but the best parts are the spiritual themes and wisdom that run through the book. There is such a depth and beauty to the writing, and I was so pleased with the echoes of Christianity!

Kale is a young slave-girl who is mysteriously drawn to dragon’s eggs. She is sent on a quest to retrieve a valuable egg from an evil wizard, but her mission is not as straight-forward as it seems. Although she has help along the way, Kale is sometimes unsure whether she can trust her new friends, and tensions run high as the group learns to rely on one another in sticky situations. Book Review: Chivalrous

Chivalrous
Chivalrous by Dina L. Sleiman

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This was a nice fluff read, but I wasn’t really impressed or entertained. The plot is trite and predictable, the characters are obvious, and the writing tells instead of showing.

This is the story of Lady Gwendolyn, who longs to fight as a knight and sneaks into a tournament. She is wary of romance, because her father is a mean old tyrant, but she learns to love the low-born Sir Allen. Meanwhile, Sir Allen is determined to prove that despite his low birth, he is just as noble of heart as the other knights. Typical Medieval stuff, and utterly unoriginal. Continue reading

Book Review: Bible Promises for Teens

Bible Promises for Teens
Bible Promises for Teens by Barbara Farmer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I love how this devotional book is divided by topic, so that whatever difficulty you may be having in life, you can turn to that topic and receive encouragement. The Scripture verses are a mixture of NIV, the Message, and NKJV.
Each topic has five or six passages of Scripture that pertain to the subject. I found this book wonderfully inspiring! It would make a lovely gift for any teen.
The graphics and layout are so beautiful!

The Middle School Rules of Brian Urlacher by Sean Jensen

I don’t know anything about football, so I was pretty lost through most of this book. But I think if I were a 6th-8th grade kid who loved football, I would probably love this book!

This tells the story of a young boy who loves sports, mainly basketball and football, and how that plays a large role in the development of his character. Continue reading

Warrior Chicks: Rising Strong When Life Wants to Take You Down by Holly Wagner

This is an empowering book about relying on God, surviving the battles of life, and being beautiful just the way you are! It’s definitely an inspiring and encouraging book!
One thing I really loved about this book is that it doesn’t just encourage you to survive through the dark places in life, but to also overcome that darkness and come out on the other side with inner light that you can shine onto others. Continue reading
