The Adventures of Superhero Girl by Faith Erin Hicks

These comics are wonderfully clever and fun! They are set up almost like daily comic strips with little punchlines, but with a longer story line too.
Superhero Girl has some awesome superpowers, but struggles to pay her rent, buys capes at secondhand thrift stores, and suffers from insecurity because her brother is a cooler, more popular superhero. When she has to put up with snarky comments from Skeptical Guy AND battle an alien monster, Superhero Girl has to call up all her patience and superhero know-how to save the day, and get her laundry done. The War at Ellsmere by Faith Erin Hicks

I adore this graphic novel! Juniper is a scholarship student who attends a fancy girls boarding school. She makes friends (and enemies) on her very first day, and has to hold her own in the new more competitive learning climate. But there is also a mysterious legend about the old forest and whatever monster or myth might be lurking in its dark shadows.
I’m growing to love Faith Erin Hicks work! Her stories are interesting and surprising, and the artwork is just so beautiful! Continue reading

Manga Classics: The Scarlet Letter by Stacy King

I am so impressed with this graphic novel! The artwork is beautiful and each panel shows a clear story. The classic story of the Scarlet Letter is condensed but retains its integrity, and the characters are powerfully depicted. The tension and emotion of the story really comes through in the art and dialogue. Even small changes in the coloring or lighting show a change in mood or scene, and as the characters develop and change through the story, their appearance slightly changes to reflect that as well. I love this story! The artwork is so gorgeous, and I love how the colors subtly change between the real and virtual worlds. The story is really compelling and interesting, and I like that in the beginning Anda is a newb in the game, so that we get to discover the virtual reality along with her and learn about the Coarsegold world.
