Book Review: God’s Gift

God’s Gift by Lee Ann Mancini – 5 stars

Christian is a little turtle who is excited to get presents at Christmas, but the starfish Jacob says that he gets more presents at Hannukah because he is Jewish. The boys start to fight about who gets more presents, until their parents teach them the true meaning of Christmas and Hannukah combined.

I thought this was a sweet little book about not being greedy during the holidays, and celebrating God’s love together. It’s well-written, with a coherent plot and interesting details. Each character is distinct and lovable.
The illustrations are colorful and beautiful, and there are hidden symbols on every page for readers to hunt and find! This would be perfect to read aloud to children! g

Picture Book Reviews: Super Fish

Super Fish
Super Fish by Mary Lee

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A cute little story told by a turtle who claims to have met the famous Super Fish, with her purple cape and her super-strength and super-hearing. She helps sea creatures in trouble, and the turtle tells the story of how Super Fish saved him.

The illustrations are cute! The story is funny and snappy! This would be a good book to read aloud to children and make funny voices for the characters.

Super Fish 2: The Stare Wars Super Fish 2: The Stare Wars by Mary Lee

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Super Fish has a purple cape, super-strength, and super-hearing, but does she have super-staring abilities? When the octopus gets into a staring contest with Super Fish, nothing in all the oceans will distract either opponent from their unblinking competition, until Super Fish pulls out her secret weapon!

The illustrations are so cute! Super Fish is an adorable and strong super-hero, and the story is hilarious and snappy! This would be a good book to read aloud to children and make funny voices for all the characters.

Book Review: Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar

Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar
Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar by Edgar Rice Burroughs

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Tarzan and Jane have lost their vast fortune, so Tarzan journeys to Opar to plunder the treasure troves of that lost civilization. But his journey is perilous, and a treacherous friend brings ruin and betrayal that will bring down even strong Tarzan. Jane is left to defend herself against the marauding Arabs, and Tarzan will have to call once again on his animal friends of the jungle to save the day.

I always like the pace of a Burroughs novel. No frills or tangents, just straightforward action and plot that moves briskly. With very few words, Burroughs paints a vivid picture of the setting, the characters, and the action. Continue reading

Book Review: Jesus the King

Jesus the King: Understanding the Life and Death of the Son of God
Jesus the King: Understanding the Life and Death of the Son of God by Timothy J. Keller

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Excellent writing, inspiring insights, solid Bible doctrine, and a fresh look at the life of Christ through the lens of his death. I was incredibly impressed with this book. It’s accessible and easy to understand, although it deals with some deep cosmic ideas.

The whole book is a beautiful revelation of truth. I was crying in one chapter and then laughing in the next. It’s touching and thought-provoking. Every chapter is so deep and insightful. I was spiritually refreshed on every page!

Manga Review: Ouran High School Host Club

Ouran High School Host Club, Vol. 1
Ouran High School Host Club, Vol. 1 by Bisco Hatori

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Haruhi stumbles into the Host Club headquarters, and accidentally knocks over an expensive vase. In order to pay for the vase, Haruhi has to work with the Host Club entertaining young ladies at parties and teas. But what they don’t know is that Haruhi, although she dresses in a masculine way, is actually a girl! Haruhi must pretend to be a boy to pay back her debt, and the more she hangs out with the boys of the Host Club, the more she realizes how mysterious they really are.

After watching the anime, I’m already in love with these characters, so reading it as manga just enhances the whole story! I love the artwork. I love the sweet characters and their hilarious drama! I love how the characters seem shallow in the beginning, but then we gradually begin to see more depth to each of them. I love how every character is unique and has their own backstory.
I’m glad that I watched the anime first though, because it’s easier to keep track of the many supporting characters.
Can’t wait to read them all!
