Dungeon Runners: Fang Attack (Volume 4)
by Kieran Larwood (Goodreads Author), Joe Todd-Stanton (Illustrator)
4 out of 5 stars
Kit is a half-gnome and half-dwarf, who has entered the Dungeon Runners league. His teammates are a sea hag and a vegan vampire. Kit is supposed to be the fighter in their group, but he keeps dropping his magic sword in training. Everyone laughs, thinking that this team is too small and too young to survive the dangerous competition. In this fourth book of the series, they travel to the vampire’s home island, where Kit’s friend Thorn is terrified that the other vampires will find out that he is vegan. Can they survive the puzzles and monsters of the dungeon, and avoid being eaten by a crowd of vampires?
I loved this cute chapter book! The illustrations are so adorable, and I liked that the characters have statistic cards that show their combat skills, magic powers, and cleverness points. There is also a cool map at the beginning, and a maze at the end of the book to test your skills.
The whole plot in the Dungeon is so brilliant! I loved all the obstacles and puzzles they have to face, and it was so imaginative how they make it through the Dungeon. A lot of things go wrong, but they never give up! Some of the other teams cheat, but Kit and his team stay true even when it gets tough.
In this book Kit and his team face the ultimate moral dilemma, whether to help the bully who has been making their lives miserable, or let the bully die in the dungeon. They sacrifice their most valuable asset to help the bully, but they feel good knowing that they have done the right thing even at such a cost.
I also really liked that the book does not have any really scary monsters or bad violence. It’s age appropriate for kids 6-11. There is a massive vampire that tries to kill everyone, but it’s not too scary or violent. Very kid-friendly, but you still get all the fun of the monster stuff without it being too much.
