4 out of 5 stars

Kit is a half-gnome and half-dwarf, who has entered the Dungeon Runners league. His teammates are a sea hag and a vegan vampire. Kit is supposed to be the fighter in their group, but he keeps dropping his magic sword in training. Everyone laughs, thinking that this team is too small and too young to survive the dangerous competition. In this third book of the series, they go into an underwater dungeon, and Kit is very nervous because he can’t swim! But they find that some of the other dungeon runner teams are friendly, and they might have some unexpected allies.

I loved this cute chapter book! The illustrations are so adorable, and I liked that the characters have statistic cards that show their combat skills, magic powers, and cleverness points. There is also a cool map at the beginning, and a special craft you can do at the end of the book to make a twelve-sided die.

The whole plot in the Dungeon is so brilliant! I loved all the obstacles they have to face, and it was so imaginative how they make it through the Dungeon. A lot of things so wrong, but they never give up! Some of the other teams cheat, but Kit and his team stay true even when it gets tough.

Kit is such an optimistic character! I especially liked that his morals are tested, and he has to decide whether to help others or just be selfish. His team decides to be kind and generous, and it pays off when their allies are able to help them. I really love the good moral messages about honesty and kindness.

I also really liked that the book does not have any really scary monsters or bad violence. It’s age appropriate for kids 6-11. There is a narghoul monster that is half narwhal and half ghoul. Very kid-friendly, but you still get all the fun of the monster stuff without it being too scary or violent.
