Deadweather and Sunrise (The Chronicles of Egg, #1)
by Geoff Rodkey
4 out of 5 stars
Thirteen-year-old Egg lives with his father, brother, and sister on Deadweather Island, where they work hard on a fruit plantation full of pirates. Egg is surprised when his father takes them on a trip to the neighboring island of Sunrise for a mysterious meeting with a lawyer. They also meet the richest man on the island, Mr. Pembroke, and his daughter Millicent. Egg promptly falls in love with Millicent, but finds himself running for his life in a series of adventures that will lead him back to Deadweather and a legendary treasure.
I loved this pirate adventure so much! The plot really moves along with action and mystery and intrigue. I thought Millicent and Egg were so cute together! Millicent is full of confidence and daring, but she is sheltered in her life of riches, and is ridiculously obtuse about some things. Egg is stupidly courageous at times, always ready to do the right thing even if it kills him. Between the two of them, they make plenty of impulsive, fool-hardy decisions, but somehow manage to pull through and stay alive.
The writing style is excellent, and I loved that the narration is told from Egg’s perspective, so we get to really dive into his personality and thoughts and feelings. I’m definitely going to continue with the rest of the series!
