Graphic Novel Series Review: The Nightmare Brigade

The Nightmare Brigade: The Girl from Déjà Vu (The Nightmare Brigade, #1)
by Franck Thilliez, Yomgui Dumont (Illustrator)

4 out of 5 stars

Esteban and Tristan help their dad at his sleep clinic, entering the dreams of patients and helping them to fight the monsters in their nightmares. If the patients can understand the underlying issues behind their dreams, they can release their fears and find healing. When Sarah becomes a sleep patient, Esteban has a weird feeling that he has seen her before. They enter her dreams and find that things are much more complicated than they thought. Just like Esteban, Sarah has no memories of her life before a few years ago when she was adopted by her parents. Could their memory loss be connected in some way?

I loved this interesting graphic novel! The premise of entering people’s nightmares is so curious and weird, and I really loved the science fiction surrounding how they use all this technology to monitor the dreams. The world building is really excellent, as they keep discovering more and more mysteries surrounding the sleep clinic and patients. Even the doctors and technicians are hiding dark secrets.

The characters are fascinating, because they are all dealing with different issues. Esteban is haunted by his memory loss, never knowing who his parents are or where he’s from. Sarah is full of insecurities because she fears losing her adopted parents or being abandoned. Tristan deals with bullies who tease him because he’s in a wheelchair, but in the dreams, he can walk. So he goes back and forth between being handicapped in the real world, and feeling powerful and strong in the dream world. It’s a compelling situation for each of them. Even while they are trying to guide the patients through their dreams, they are also working out their own mental health issues and figuring out how to work together as a team.

The plot is spooky and mysterious, but not too scary. The nightmares have some monsters and weird things, but it didn’t freak me out too bad. Nothing super disturbing, but just pleasantly creepy.

The artwork is great! Every page is really colorful and dynamic, full of action and emotion.
I can’t wait to read the next volume of the series!

The Nightmare Brigade: Into the Woods (The Nightmare Brigade, #2)

4 out of 5 stars

Esteban, Tristan, and Sarah help their adopted dad at his sleep clinic, entering the dreams of patients and helping them to fight the monsters in their nightmares. If the patients can understand the underlying issues behind their dreams, they can release their fears and find healing.

When a monster from the nightmares gets loose in the real world, they have to discover who is hiding in plain sight and try to lure them back into the nightmare world.

I loved this second volume in the series! There are tons of plot twists and weird settings in the different nightmares. I love the mystery and all the little clues that are hinting at deeper enigmas hidden in each person’s subconscious.

The characters are fascinating, and their group dynamic changes a lot in this second book. Sarah and Esteban are searching for answers about their memory loss, and Tristan is trying to find clues about his missing mother. As Sarah and Esteban grow closer, Tristan starts to feel left out, but they still have to work together as a team and trust each other with their lives while they navigate the dangerous nightmares.

The Nightmare Brigade: Finding Alice (The Nightmare Brigade, #3)

4 out of 5 stars

Esteban, Sarah, and Tristan venture into Leonard’s wild mind to see if they can rescue Tristan’s mother from his nightmares. They are used to entering people’s nightmares, but nothing can prepare them for the maze of Leonard’s unhinged dreams.

I loved this graphic novel series! There are tons of plot twists and weird settings in the different layers of Leonard’s nightmares. I love the mystery and all the danger that is threatening the Nightmare Brigade from within and without.

It was really interesting to see how the characters deal with Leonard’s nightmares in different ways, figuring out how to navigate through together and somehow find Tristan’s mother. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses, so they really have to rely on each other to get through.

The Nightmare Brigade: Dust-Off Dreams (The Nightmare Brigade, #4)
by Franck Thilliez

4 out of 5 stars

The Nightmare Brigade has new technology that allows them to enter patient’s memories while the patient is under hypnosis. They try to help people see their memories in a new light and find healing from their past trauma. But someone is sabotaging them from within, and suspicion falls on the least likely person. When Esteban, Sarah, and Tristan are trapped inside a memory of the Old West, they have to fight vampires and figure out the mystery of an old Native American who leads them into even deeper memories locked in the mind of the patient.

I loved this graphic novel series! There are tons of plot twists as we investigate who is sabotaging the sleep/memory clinic. I love the mystery and all the danger that is threatening the Nightmare Brigade from within and without.

Unfortunately, this volume ends with a bit of a cliffhanger, and the next volume has not been translated from French yet.
