An Uncertain Choice
An Uncertain Choice by Jody Hedlund
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Fairy tale castles, court intrigue, jousting tournaments, Ancient Vows to be broken, mysterious plagues and murder, knights walking around looking hot, and of course, a princess who must fall in love before the proverbial stroke of midnight… What’s not to love?! I devoured this book, and adored every second!

I immediately connected Continue reading

But that’s exactly what happened. Face-to-face with dark forces, spellbinding magic, and mystical worlds where nothing is what it seems, Kelsey risks everything to piece together an ancient prophecy that could break the curse forever. Review: Gathering Blue

Gathering Blue
Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“In her strongest work to date, Lois Lowry once again creates a mysterious but plausible future world. It is a society ruled by savagery and deceit that shuns and discards the weak. Left orphaned and physically flawed, young Kira faces a frightening, uncertain future. Blessed with an almost magical talent that keeps her alive, she struggles with ever broadening responsibilities in her quest for truth, discovering things that will change her life forever.” -GoodReads

I loved this book almost as much as the Giver! I’m falling in love with Lowry’s books one by one! Kira’s connection to her embroidery art is touching and mysterious. It really sparked my interest from the beginning. I loved seeing her growing into her art, and discovering what it means to be an artist. The responsibility of art can be a heavy burden or a joy, and Kira has to make decisions, hard choices, about how to Continue reading

Book Review: By the Grace of Todd

By the Grace of Todd
By the Grace of Todd by Louise Galveston
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

What a cute book! I love the premise about tiny people being spawned on a gym sock! On the surface, this is your typical story of a middle-school kid trying to avoid bullies, wishing he could be one of the “cool kids”, and ultimately learning about friendship and how to stand up for himself.

But the addition of those tiny people makes it so unique and fun, especially once the little Toddlians start watching TV and reading the encyclopedia! Their out-of-place references to pop culture, John Wayne movies, Shakespeare, and Winston Churchill had me laughing in every chapter! It’s the details that make this story special! Continue reading

Book Review: The Goddess Test

The Goddess Test
The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I fell in love with this retelling of the Persephone story set in the modern day!
Kate’s mother is dying of cancer, so Kate makes a deal with Henry (Hades) that she will undergo seven tests and stay with him in the Underworld for 6 months out of the year as Persephone did, and in return he will keep her mother alive. But some of the gods don’t want her to succeed, and every second she spends in the Underworld, her life is in danger.

I liked Kate’s character immediately. She is a caring and generous person, but she also has a no-nonsense attitude that makes her gutsy and edgy! Her interactions with people were full of humor and just… a realness. She is surrounded by the supernatural, and she has this beautiful raw humanity. She is frail. She is confused. She is awkward at times. Discovering the world of the Greek gods through her eyes, and seeing her develop slowly into a more confident and connected person was simply fascinating. Continue reading
