Nonesuch is a dragon without a treasure. When his grandmother dies, she leaves behind a substantial treasure of gold and jewels, but it doesn’t really feel quite right to Nonesuch. He goes through a transformation and discovers that he can shrink down to the size of an insect if he doesn’t eat much, or he can grow larger again if he eats more. He is curious about humans, so he shrinks down and flies into an abbey where a monk is painstakingly writing and illuminating a prayer book. The monk is inspired by the sight of a tiny dragon and begins to draw him into the margins of the book. When a thief threatens to steal the precious book, Nonesuch knows that he has found a treasure he will guard with all his heart. But he is trapped along with the book in a strong box and can’t get out for centuries. 4.5 out of 5 stars

The Queen will banish Prince Lir from the kingdom unless he can complete a quest and rescue a maiden from the dragon. His stepbrother, Prince Delbayne, encourages him to try the quest, even though Lir is more of a scholar than a warrior. Lir travels to the Isle of Salt where he finds the dragon sickly and weak in a damp and moldy cavern. The dragon has lost his fire and his wing is broken, but he could still kill a knight with one slash of his claws. The maiden Cethlenn used to be a servant girl in Lir’s kingdom. Now she has to serve the dragon by treading on dark cherries in the wine press to make the dragon’s cherry wine. So the scholarly knight, the humble maiden, and the old dragon meet for the first time. These three unlikely allies will discover that dark magic is hiding where they least expect it, so they must join together if they want to be free.

Dragonology: The Complete Book of Dragons (Ologies, #1)

5 out of 5 stars

Researching dragons is a rewarding field of work. We learn about the different types of dragons, how they breathe fire, how baby dragons are hatched, and various magic spells to subdue dragons. There are even “samples” of the membrane of a dragon wing, their shed skin, and dragondust. We learn about ancient legends of dragons from all over the world, their habitats and what they eat. There are diagrams of the dragons skeletal and muscle structure, as well as the venom reservoir and spark pouch that allows them to create flames. Dragons have their own language and writing system. They love riddles, so there is a special section of the book about finding the answers to ancient riddles.

In this final book of the series, Jack and Draycos are running out of time to stop the genocide of Draycos’ entire race, the K’da. The machinery of war is lining up to annihilate the K’da spaceships that will be arriving soon, but Jack and Draycos don’t know where the final rendezvous point will be. Their only hope is to follow their enemies and hope that they can warn the K’da in time.

I loved this book so much! Every book in the series is action-packed and full of mystery and danger.

4.5 out of 5 stars

In this fourth book of the series, Jack and Draycos visit a distant planet with their friend, Alison Kayna. They discover a herd of creatures called Phooka that appear similar to K’da like Draycos. However, the creatures are insentient, unintelligent, slow, and behave like animals with no language. Draycos wonders if his people, the K’da, could have evolved from this lower animal form. He questions what that could mean for his species in the future.
The mercenaries from the Malison Ring track Jack and Draycos to the planet, forcing them all to flee into the dense forest. Jack must herd the Phooka through miles of dangerous terrain to save them from being slaughtered by the mercenaries.

Book Review: Dragon and Slave

Dragon and Slave by Timothy Zahn

Dragon and Slave (Dragonback, #3)
by Timothy Zahn (Goodreads Author)

4 out of 5 stars

Jack and his friend/symbiont Draycos are looking for information about who attacked Draycos’ people. They try to infiltrate a mercenary compound by posing as slaves, certain that they will be able to escape later. However, things take a nasty turn when Jack becomes a slave for real, and is sent to work in the fields with the other slaves.

The plot is full of non-stop action, and I was very interested in the world-building of the planet Brum-a-dum. Jack and Draycos meet so many different types of aliens, and they are all really imaginative and memorable! I love the writing style, the characters, the plot twists, and everything!
