The Boggart loves to play tricks on people in his ancient castle in Scotland. When their father inherits the castle, siblings Emily and Jessup are delighted with everything in Scotland. But after their visit, the Boggart accidentally hitches a ride back home with them to Canada inside a roll-top desk. He finds it difficult to adjust to modern life, and the children have to figure out why a mischievous ancient spirit is making trouble in their home.
This book is so enchanting from start to finish! I love the way that the modern world collides with the ancient legends, and the poor Boggart is so confused. It’s really interesting that a large part of the story is told from the Boggart’s perspective, so we get to see his humorous mischief and trickery firsthand. It’s so imaginative and fun!
The writing is absolute perfection, bringing the reader into the emotions and thoughts of each character, and weaving these funny scenes that also have a deeper meaning. There are a few scenes that really tugged at my heart as we see the Boggart infusing everyone around him with a longing for home. It’s amazing how he can influence the people around him with his magic!
Reading it for the second time, I listened to the audiobook narrated by David Rintoul, and it was beautifully done! You could hear the urgency and tension in the narrator’s voice during the adventurous scenes. Really excellent narration!
