School For Good And Evil #5 – A Crystal Of Time
by Soman Chainani

Agatha and Tedros are on the run. A false king has seized the throne of Camelot, lying to the people and claiming to be King Arthur’s true son. Sophie is caught between them, trying to find out the truth and balance her loyalty to her friends and to her new love. Agatha uses Dovey’s crystal ball to investigate the past and find who the false king really is.

I loved all the magic and fairy tale characters in Camelot! In this book, we get more of the backstory of various characters and how and why they have taken different sides in the battle for Camelot. There were a couple of plot twists that really surprised me!

The adventure really takes off in this book, as they are constantly running from the bad guys, fighting battles, and discovering buried secrets from the past. I guess I thought from the title that they would be travelling in time, but the crystal just shows them visions from different times in the past, present, and future.

Tedros is finally starting to grow up in this book, taking responsibility and finding solutions, leading the team in a stronger way but staying humble. I really love how he and Agatha work together as leaders for their ragtag group.

Sophie is a mess, again. She is torn in her loyalties and she keeps switching sides as she discovers more about Rhian and his brother. But her one constant is her loyalty to Agatha and their friendship. I love that her character is so complex!

I partly read this book with my eyes and partly listened to the audiobook narrated by Polly Lee. I think I’m starting to get used to the narrative style, so I enjoyed it okay.
