Book Review: Summer Brain Quest Series

Summer Brain Quest Series

by Workman Publishing

5 out of 5 stars

These books have colorful activity pages for children to review their knowledge before going into the next grade. It comes with a summer progress map, where you can use the enclosed stickers to mark your progress when you complete a page or activity. There are bonus questions and extra outside activities that will earn you special achievement stickers too! Once the book is complete, you get an award certificate.

You can review over punctuation and grammar, math, reading comprehension, history, and science. I really liked the sections about interpreting figurative language into literal language, and researching Ancient Egypt.

In the earlier grades, you can review compound words, do some creative writing, and learn about how water turns from solid to liquid to gas. You can review basic concepts about the weather, seasons, and different habitats around the world. You will get to write some poetry, learn to tell time, and choose the right adjectives for a story.

In the later grades, there are sections for reading comprehension, punctuation, measuring angles, comparing fractions, and writing decimals. I really liked the sections about history and the US Constitution and Bill of Rights! You even learn geography and how to read a map! There is a science section that talks about the relative size of planets in the solar system (but poor Pluto is not included).

There are answers in the back of the book to check your work. There is also a set of flashcards that you can cut out of the book for testing your knowledge. There is a reading list of books that you can check off as you read them.

This book has so many cool features! Every single page is full of brightly colored illustrations and information boxes. The activities are really interesting and fun!
