Hear Them Roar: 14 Endangered Animals from Around the World
by Becky Thorns (Illustrator), June Smalls ( Author)
This book has buttons that play audio of the roars, chirps, and calls of fourteen endangered animals. Each page gives information about the animal, their habitat, why they are endangered, and what humans are doing to conserve the species. There is even a little world map that shows where their natural habitat is.
It was incredibly interesting to learn about these animals and birds! They are all such beautiful species, and it is so important to educate people about endangered animals. I really liked that the book has a hopeful tone overall, focusing on the good things that we are doing to preserve these animals.
The artwork is gorgeous, with bright colors and a pleasing layout for the pages. Each animal has a cartoon-style portrait with delicate brushstrokes showing their fur or feathers. It’s really pretty!
The only thing I didn’t like was that the audio is so loud. I had to cover the speaker with my hand to muffle the sound. These animals calls are loud! And each audio sample is 30 seconds long. That just seemed like it was too long. Ten seconds would have been sufficient. I don’t need to hear the roaring or howling or chirping for 30 seconds over and over and over. It felt redundant. Once I’ve heard it twice, that is enough.
