Don't Do It, Doug! by Maudie Powell-Tuck

Don’t Do It, Doug!
by Maudie Powell-Tuck, Duncan Beedie (Illustrator)

5 out of 5 stars

Doug is a mischievous hamster with poor impulse control… actually, no impulse control. He pushes the big red button. He pulls the lever with warnings on it. He shakes up a can of soda until it fizzes everywhere. He makes himself sick eating too many donuts. He pokes a beehive and gets stung. He yells to start the avalanche. He puts a pot of beans on his head. Dude. A pot of beans?

But when Doug tries other ways of keeping busy and finding thrills in safe ways (like skydiving and rollercoasters), he learns that he doesn’t have to push every button and pull every lever, and the pot of beans stays on the stove.

This was a cute book about learning to control our wild impulses. Doug has the funniest little grin on his face when he does something insane. It made me laugh so hard! I love the artwork and the cute animal characters! Every page is hilarious!

Mister Norton's New Truck by Huw Lewis Jones

Mister Norton’s New Truck
by Huw Lewis Jones, Corey Egbert  (Illustrator)

5 out of 5 stars

The bear borrows Mr. Norton’s bicycle and returns it all dented and the tires all wonky. Mr. Norton tries to catch the bus, but it’s too full. He tries roller skates, a scooter, and an old red wagon, but he has so many animal friends that also come along for the ride that there just isn’t room. Mr. Norton remembers that there is an old truck in the barn, but it won’t run. It will take some creative repairs from his animal friends to get that truck working again!

This was such a funny story, and I loved all the shenanigans from the animals. Poor Mr. Norton! He is so patient with them, but there are certainly some wild difficulties when you have various animals hitching a ride.
I love the cute illustrations! The artwork really brings in the comedy of the story as Mr. Norton is precariously riding a scooter, or wobbling around on roller skates.
