Book Review: Silver on the Tree

Silver On The Tree by Susan Cooper

Silver On The Tree (Dark is Rising #5)
by Susan Cooper

In this final book of the Dark is Rising series, Will and Bran team up with the siblings, Jane, Simon, and Barney to stop the rising of the Dark. Merriman is guiding and advising them, but he can’t foresee all the tricks and devilry of the Dark. Bran must recover the legendry crystal sword from the lost land, and use the sword to cut the silver mistletoe from the tree at the very moment of its flowering.

I love the way that ordinary humans like Jane, Simon, and Barney are caught up in these grand adventures with the Old Ones like Will and Merriman. Bran is somewhere in between; he’s a human brought out of time and walks a middle road between light and dark, but always choosing the light.

This whole series is ultimately about choices. Do humans choose to be good and compassionate, or do they choose evil? Each choice, each person, each moment determines the path that will follow for good or ill.

The writing is so powerful and immersive. I love that with just a few words, the author plunges the reader into the middle of the scene, and you FEEL what the characters are feeling.

I love how the story incorporates Arthurian legend into the adventure, and we get a whole new perspective on ancient times and the age-old fight between good and evil.

This final book has a really satisfying ending, as all the little pieces of the puzzle that Will has been gathering for several books all come together to defeat the dark. You know that the characters will continue to choose the good and fight against evil in all its forms for the rest of their lives.
