Book Review: Trials of Apollo: Tower of Nero

The Tower of Nero by Rick Riordan

The Tower of Nero (The Trials of Apollo, #5)

3 out of 5 stars

Zeus punishes Apollo by turning him into a mortal human. Apollo must complete various trials and serve a demigod named Meg, so that he can regain his godly status. In this final book of the series, Meg and Apollo are traveling to New York to face the evil Emperor Nero and the terrifying giant snake, Python, that is controlling all the prophecies.

As always the adventure is exciting, and I liked learning about even more obscure Greek and Roman legendary creatures and myths. The series is brought to a satisfying conclusion for Apollo and all his friends. However, there were a few things in this book that really annoyed me and it was hard to get past that and enjoy the rest of the story.

I really loved the hilarious narration from Apollo’s perspective! He is so ridiculous sometimes, but there are also many moments of heartbreak in this book, so it was interesting to see how Apollo deals with those more serious emotions of grief and anger.
Apollo’s character development reaches its conclusion as he changes into a compassionate and kind person and carries those traits with him as he hopes to regain his godhood. I really love how he reacts in his newfound maturity, and how he gets inspired by the heroic demigods who assist him on his quests.
