In this third book of the series, the story picks up three years after the previous book. Although, Kale joins the story later on, we mostly follow Kale’s friend Bardon, as he tries to make a decision about whether he wants to become a knight of Paladin. He is sent on a sabbatical to ponder his decision, but is swept up in a quest to assist an old granny to find her missing son, a knight who has been cursed with a sleeping spell.

Awkward Bardon has never enjoyed social situations, and now he is traipsing across half the continent with a scatterbrained old granny in tow, her silly granddaughter, and their strict guardian, a tiny but ferocious minniken. Along the way, their party keeps growing with the most annoying people, and poor Bardon’s patience is stretched to the limit. As the leader of the quest, he feels the heavy responsibility to keep them all safe, which is difficult when they keep wandering off!

I loved this book so much! The magic and dragons and quests are just perfect, but the best parts are the spiritual themes and wisdom that run through the book. There is such a depth and beauty to the writing, and I was so pleased with the echoes of Christianity! I like when the characters think through some of the philosophy of their faith, although I can’t say I always agree with their application. Still, it is nice to see these characters asking questions and trying to find their path in life with guidance from God.

The world building is amazing! There are many different types of dragons and we get to see Bardon interacting with his own riding dragon, Greer. This is the first book in the series where we see a bit of romance, and it is very sweet and innocent. Every character is so original and well-rounded and interesting! I can’t wait to read the rest of the books just to find out more about this rich fantasy world!
