Book Review: Reawakened

Reawakened by Colleen Houck

Reawakened (Reawakened, #1)

Lily is swept away in an adventure when she meets an ancient Egyptian prince, Amon, who has slumbered for a thousand years. His life energy is very weak, so he must rely on Lily to survive. They are magically bonded so that he can siphon a little of her energy and stay alive long enough to find his two brothers and resurrect them. They are in a race against time to complete an ancient ceremony before the evil god Seth can wreak chaos on the world.

I loved learning about the ancient Egyptian gods and legends in this book. The adventure is really exciting and there are many mysteries and twists! The characters are compelling, and I was definitely crying at a few of the more emotional scenes. I read the whole book in two days, because it was so fascinating on many levels.

One of the best things about this book was seeing the hilarious interactions between the three brothers. After thousands of years in the afterlife together, they have such a fun witty repartee, and they especially love to tease each other in front of Lily to see how she reacts. It’s so adorable!

The romance between Lily and Amon is heartfelt and sweet. They do have some steamy moments when they dance together and kiss, but otherwise it’s a clean romance. I love how Amon is willing to sacrifice anything, even hiding his own feelings, in order to keep Lily safe.

Amon is a complex and interesting character. He has thousands of years of heartache behind him, but he sticks to his purpose to sacrifice himself again and again to keep evil at bay. I loved his determination and sacrificial love, not just toward Lily but toward his brothers as well.

Lily is struggling with two sides of her personality. She has grown up always following the rules and complying with her parents’ strict standards, but she longs for free expression and creativity and the liberty to make her own choices. Through her adventures with Amon, she gains the courage to truly enjoy life and not let the expectations of others dictate her actions. It was inspiring to see her come out of her shell and grow more independent.
